For this project, I selected the first day of the tournament to examine the primary themes and sentiments expressed, with a specific focus on whether discussions surrounding humanitarian rights were present in online discourse. I chose this approach because human rights abuses had already occurred during the preparation of the stadium and infrastructure before the tournament commenced, which was expected to attract more than 1.4 million visitors (Qatar 2022). Thus, my aim was to investigate twitter users' initial reactions and attitudes towards the tournament and its host country before the actual games could potentially influence them.
